Evaluation - Question 1

Conventions of film openings:

• Most film openings are about 2 minuets long however, major blockbusters may be longer
• Introduces main characters[s]
• Scenes that introduces plot/beginning of the film giving subtle clues/hints about the narrative. They act as teasers to keep the audience engaged.
• Non diegetic sound - usually atmospheric, mysterious and eerie to build up tension and suspense. Sounds may also simply music from the movie sound track. We may also hear some narration which could give us an insight into the narrative or a character. There may also be some special effects too.
• Titles

Conventions of a title sequence:

*In major blockbusters, the conventions may be challenged. The 2 main actors, who will usually be huge names, would appear before the title of the film. This is because they are acting as a marketing tool to attract a larger, greater audience.*

INTERTEXTUALITY

We used intertexuality from the urban, London based movie 'Adulthood'. Both scenes end the same with a character being follwed from behind and then attacked. Here's an example of how we used the intertexuality from Adulthood. However, the only difference is, is that our scene is from an extreme close up of the torso area whereas theirs is from the head area.

This gif. shows some examples of stereotypical representations used in our film in comparison to actual TV shows and films. I have used examples from spooks - where the asian characters are the villains, and the godfather and the sopranos to show the typically look of a gangster

Representation - The description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature

In our film we had a stereotypical negative representation of ethnic minorities in western society; The mob boss and hit man were black, and the character who was supposed to get killed but killed instead, was asian. This is stereotypical because ethnic minorities are usually portrayed as 'the bad guy' in many films and TV shows and are usually always involved in criminal activities. 

Gender - We had an all male cast and they were all showed signs of masculinity as they were all involved in crime and violence.

We also had a stereotypical 'gangster': The hit man was dressed smartly/formally and the mob boss was dressed in a suit - black tie and white shirt.

Social Class - All the characters are from a working class background. They are usually represented as criminals, being immoral, having some form of poverty, unreasonable workers etc. This is evident as the working class character is being paid a huge sum of money illegally to commit a crime.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My media product is a crime thriller movie. By being a 'crime' thriller it is a sub genre of 'Thriller' movies. The wider audience for thrillers are usually males around the ages of 16-35. This is for many reasons. One reason is due to the content in thrillers. In thrillers, there are always some sort of violent and graphic scenes. Violence mainly appeals to males as it is a masculine attraction. Also, as thrillers contain violence, it could be disturbing for younger people to watch hence why it has an older audience.

The audience for crime thrillers are fairly similar. The main age range would probably be around 18-35. It would also have a male dominated audience as well due to the content. Crime thrillers inevitably contain violence, and also more explicit stuff like drug use, swearing etc.

The target audience for my own movie is 16-25 males who live in an urban city. This is because of where the movie is set - It's set in gritty parts of london involving council estates, dark alley ways etc. An older audience wouldn't really relate to those types of settings whereas a lot of youths and young adults would. Also, the target audience will be males because the 3 leading actors are all males as well. Also, there are violent scenes such as a shooting and that will appeal more to males than females.

This is an official Facebook profile page for my film. This Facebook page is just one way of promoting my product to my audience. However, this Facebook page will mainly be targeted at the younger side of my audience - the 16-21 age range. This is becuase that's the age range of most of the day to day users on social networking sites and the ones who will most likely see it.

These are the technologies we have used during our making of our film


FINAL CUT PRO x SOUNDTRACK PRO
We combined these two technologies to add sound to our film. We had
to export our film from final cut pro into sound track pro, adding foley
sounds, special effects and also a backing track to create a tense, edgy atmosphere.

JVC GY HMI 100E CAMERA x LED LIGHT
We combined these two technologies to record scenes with extremely low lighting. We done this by
the LED light onto the top of the JVC GY HMI 100E camera.

The JVCGYHM100E camera was extremely useful especially because of the size. It was small, light, which made it easy to pack and carry around when filming on locations out of college. Also, because the camera was HD, it made our footage seem extremely professional and high in quality.

Final Cut was useful when editing all our footage because it was very easy to use and understand especially as we had a lot of footage to play about with. Also, it was good because we could do our titles within FCP.

Using Blogger was one of the best and easiest ways saving my work. For example, if it was saved on a usb there's a high chance it could get damaged whereas blogger is 100% secure. Blogger was also useful for doing work with member of my group. for example, if one of us had an idea we could simply just post it onto blogger, saving a lot of time and effort trying to contact someone.

How did you attract/address your target audience?

Editing Titles

This is the sequence of our film titles. When doing our titles, we have followed a conventional sequence. For example, we have put the title of our film before the name of  the actors in our film. We done this because conventionally, unless the actor is a huge star, the title of the film should come before everything else. 

We have also put the name of actors in order of status, from highest to lowest. This is also a conventional method.

These are some examples of the titles we have used. We used this sketchy, rough edged type of font to relate to the theme of our film. The process of adding titles was quite difficult. We initially wanted to add effects to our titles using a programme called 'Motion'. However this was too time consuming and also difficult to use, which resulted in us using titles on Final cut pro.

TITLES
During the filming we had to decide on the titles and if we are sticking to the same style at first we decided to do on screen titles and then wanted titles on a black screen. However we realised out filming and scenes where too much of a time waste because we had to keep it as an OPENING and try not to drag it on too much. so doing titles on a black screen would make it longer and over the limit of a 2minute opening which is our aim.

SOUND
We searched for different sounds and music for most part of our film however this took alot of time because we didnt really consider the music and sounds at first we knew the foley sounds but not the actual music so this took up loads of time than nessasary to find however the end result we found suitable sounds and mixed it in "SOUNDTRACK".

* These are the two main problems we had on the editing stage while trying to rush into it too much. but after putting it all together we think that we finally achieved a good and satisfying edit that we was proud of. We added the effects - motions and transactions and we think its going well so far.

FILMING - SHOOT 2

This is the Location we filmed at: The Barbican centre. We wanted an urban scenery that has a little bit of mysery along with it and so we chose this mostly for the fact there are so many ways in which we can take different shots of a follwoing scene.

This is where we shot the scene where i am being followed down the stairs and we realised we had to put the camera at a low angle by moving the tripod to its lowest by using the handles.

This is where we check all shots for focus, angle and the way the scene is set and we must consider the mise en scene and lighting to make sure it flows throughout all our clips this is why we had to make sure that we try to film all of the scenes in one day to get the timing right and create a realistic feel.

This is the scene where we decide to take a high angle shot of me walking and the follower/hitman is watching me and making decisions on where my next move is... this is when it slightly goes wrong because right here he is behind me a bit more than the beginning so the last shot tells the timing that he is late and lost track of the victim.

this picture illustrates the fact it was windy and cold and we had to try set up equipment where there was no wind because even our hands got a bit too cold to handle the equipment. we learned that we had to be quick because the second time we done it we were running behind on time. also had to re-shoot all the scenes again. explained below.

 

 

 

 

* SHOOT 2 was where we had to re-do all the scenes because the main characters was injured at home so 'Emadul' had to step in and play the part of the person being followed. Even though we had to re-do everything we were more confident in this because we knew what shots we needed and had a rough idea of what we needed to do to make the shots more better... including making sure the camera is level and isnt really shakey when we had to do tracking and in this new shoot we rememberd to have a variety of shots.

FILMING - Behind the Scenes (SHOOT1)

With our story board, plot and ideas put together, our group were now able to start setting up filming in the barbican (the main location). The weather was fine according to the plan. The pictures shown beneath are behind the scenes, starting from the collection of equipment to the located spot where we processed our filming.

The equipment we used were picked up from the media department. The lighting equipment is one of which were used, as well as cameras, tripods and the camera itself that pictures were taken with. This picture was taken in the classroom before we set of for our journey to the barbican.

Although there was traffic that consumed a bit of time, we were still able to make it to the barbican at the time we planned to reach the destination, as we left earlier to avoid the traffic from cutting valuable time. Equipment was put in the luggage section to prevent damage.

We reached the location (Barbican Station). the first shots began from just outside the station, as the picture shows people going in and out of the entrance. Our group was aware of the amount of people that would be in the area, so we had to be sure that we used the equipment in the safest place to avoid any collision of equipment and actors.

This picture was taken at the same spot. We discussed exactly how we will take the shots including angles, to perfect how and what would be seen on the screen.

After the first couple shots were complete, we moved from outside the station, up the stairs of the station and to the long bridge pathway as shown below. The pathway was empty at the time of filming, giving us a better chance to use more space around us. the picture shows members of the group once again discussing how we could use the space and what shots would be used.

Once we discussed our plan for shot types in this location, we set of filming. the two main characters are shown in the picture, one behind another, carrying out the routine of someone being followed.

The first shooting got the group familiar with the area and gained more confidence the group as to what we were doing. More filming was done, but as a group we decided that we would have to make another journey to the barbican to complete the filming and to retake a few faulty shots.
