EVALUATION - QUESTION 1

CONVENTIONS of a film opening.

- Duration - approx 2minutes

- The use of sound and music which is often used to build tension.
- The production company's ident The titles: these include the production company, main cast, the film's name, other cast members and the directors. The order in which these appear varies between films.

SOUND - a good thriller has loads of sounds that give it the mood and attraction for the audience.

 

TITLE SEQUENCES

 A Normal film opening begins with: production company ident and distribution company.
Followed by the actors that are starring in the film (if the writer is more famous or well known, their name will appear first)
 The placing of the film title changes but it usually at the beginning to middle of the title sequence - most commonly around the timing that the actors name's appear. 
Then the crew: the director of photography, editor, product designer, music supervisor and costume designer. The very titles are the producer and director.

 

Titles should not interfere with the actual film so most titles are in the corner of the screen in small font and not to big that will cover up the action being shown to the audience. Some titles are bigger due to importance.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF HOW WE STUCK CLOSELY TO THE TITLE SEQUENCE STRUCTURE:

 - intertextuality

We based one of the last scenes with the ending of Adulthood (British Drama 2008 - Sequel to Kidulthood) however we filmed ours at a closer shot of the action because at the same time we have to consider are plot and the conventions of a thriller: not to let the audience see everything that will happen, we create suspense by not showing the identity of the 2 main characters - only briefly in some scenes: Creating the sense Mystery part of a "CRIME" thriller. 

The interview has been used in loads of movies but the idea was taken from are own preliminary film that we did as a training for are final filming for are crime thriller opening. 

EVALUATION - QUESTION 2

Certain stereotypes and representations serve the interests of dominant groups in society is basic to the concept of ideology. Ideology is basically the idea that social groups do not have the same amount of power in society - because of the lack of power over resources. KARL MARX was the first to discover this concept: ideas in society are used to maintain social relationships based on inequalities. So the ruling ideas are the ideas of people in power and serve to keep them in power. Common ideas in society that we assume to be 'normal' are for example: Gangs of youths in hoodies are always up to no good.

STERYOTYPES are often related to power imbalances in society. Sterotype in the media can often be negative and serve a perpetuate stereotype within our society.
*IMPORTANT* : The Media often say that sterotypes are used in TV and Newspapers because they are instantly understood by the audience.

Age - The age of actors we decided was to have them at aged 20 or above this is because men at this age are observant and active before an old age. The plot is about a MOB gang that has been running the area for a long time so we wanted to reflect that in the characters and members. We couldn't have young teens in it because it would make the MOB idea more of a amateur gang.

The Social Class - the characters are workers (middle class) not too poor. They are able to work with the MOB and gain money. We represent the characters like the MOB leader to wearing a tie and shirt often worn by business men - white & black colours: simple and formal. On average men around their 20 should atleast have a job in the UK.

Sexuality is not really considered in a male dominated film that include hard hitting action and fast pace drama/thriller. So we didn't consider this but there was none shown its just all straight men.

Ethnicity - the MOB boss was black and so was the hitman assigned to kill an asian man and his family. This is represented to the audience as not about race but more about the motives of the individuals. The hitmans motivation was money. The MOB bosses motivation was to show authority and power and the asian man's motivation was revenge. The fact it was two black males against an asian was just done purely by chance of are group. We decided to only limit our selves to having reliable characters within the group to be the characters for the film.

We represented the BINARY OPPOSITION as a strong distinguished position of a Killer & Victim. If the film was actually to be created then a classic Hero & Villain.

We have decided to represent 20 year old men as being thugs or in actual terms a Mobster - still at an old age or the 'peak' age for a man.

PRODUCTION & DISTRIBUTION

This is the Distribution Title we used because we were looking for a official RooksNest. Distribution motion image however due to the lack of time we were unable to remember to put it in. BUT as a plan we initially said we was going to use RooksNest. as a distribution company.

We chose this company because they provide small film makers a chance to show their talent and see what they can do. RooksNest was the distributor to MY BROTHER THE DEVIL. previously we done research and we see that a small company like this can have a major impact on a film. By watching MY BROTHER THE DEVIL we believe that RooksNest would support us because of the urban london based style we used - not to flashy like an american film. Our location is local to london and a hotspot for events. The plot is related to crime-thrillers that may interest RooksNest due to the plot has action and drama like MY BROTHER THE DEVIL has and that film went big and even won some awards.

INTERVIEW REVIEW:  I decided to interview a media student in "in class" when we were carrying out our group pitch. One of the reasons I decided to interview someone that wasnt our initial idea of a target audience to see if out film opening was able to attract other audiences that are outside the target audience that we - as a group were aiming for. By watching this quick interview you can see that she enjoyed the film and she "really liked it".

The rough cut feedback was helpful. we understood what we needed to do to do the best of our ability.

Our final film opening is on Vimeo for everyone to see. i hope this will attract more people into our work. loads of people our interested in the film because of the film opening and the twist at the end.



I created a private or 'secret' facebook group page that updates people on our progress. like the blog but just writing and no exploration in media. this is a facebook group page that allowed people to stay updated with the editing part of the filming however the video was unable to be uploaded to the profile due to some error's on the other hand the lead up to the uploading of the film was satisfactory due to the ammount of people that had anticipated the arrival of this video due to the storyline/plot that attracts the audience to its type of film opening the main way that the target audience of our thriller was updated was from our blog (group 32) some watched the progress while some just wanted to watch the video and enjoyed the different media used to present are findings and research projects like our preliminary film.

i recently uploaded the film opening 'BLOODLINE' to youtube. So far the views are going up however the problem with sharing on youtube was that there are some errors so the video came out glitchy. This has opened up another option for the audience to have a chance to watch the Thriller from the comfort of their home. This is really useful because in a modern society of today young teens and the target audience like to watch movies online due to the expenses of the cinema. Cinema's are more of a outing and research shows that no one goes to the cinema alone only the minority. 

The twitter account was created before when we started the project and kept updating on the different things we were doing. Most media students followed and other random people that were curious about the film. Tweeted people, tweeted plots and schedules of filming in most tweets.

PRELIMINARY PRODUCTION

Looking back on our own Prelim. we had basic knowledge of camera skills.

The screen shots on the left are from the Prelim. and the ones on the right are the ones from the final opening of bloodline. We noticed that the lighting in BLOODLINE is better because we had a more better idea of what we should do. We used the interview location in the filming of BLOODLINE as well this is because we agreed to do a quick switch of location to the JURY's Inn this was a quick illusion of location. LEFT TOP CORNER - was a tracking with the camera by using the fig-rig we was able to track Remello in the departure from the meeting. Also we considered the  different shots used to film the interview and the whole film opening; using SHOT TYPES / ANGLE SHOTS / MOVEMENT.

PLANNING - When we were planning it was easier to create schedules and creating story boards, we worked efficiently because we realised by doing a digital storyboard it takes longer so when we were planning the storyboard for BLOODLINE we drew the storyboard and took camera shots. It took us only one lesson and also half of the lesson was taken up on thinking about the titles and the actual plot.

TITLES
During the filming we had to decide on the titles and if we are sticking to the same style at first we decided to do on screen titles and then wanted titles on a black screen. However we realised out filming and scenes where too much of a time waste because we had to keep it as an OPENING and try not to drag it on too much. so doing titles on a black screen would make it longer and over the limit of a 2minute opening which is our aim.

SOUND
We searched for different sounds and music for most part of our film however this took alot of time because we didnt really consider the music and sounds at first we knew the foley sounds but not the actual music so this took up loads of time than nessasary to find however the end result we found suitable sounds and mixed it in "SOUNDTRACK".

* These are the two main problems we had on the editing stage while trying to rush into it too much. but after putting it all together we think that we finally achieved a good and satisfying edit that we was proud of. We added the effects - motions and transactions and we think its going well so far.

FILMING - SHOOT 2

This is the Location we filmed at: The Barbican centre. We wanted an urban scenery that has a little bit of mysery along with it and so we chose this mostly for the fact there are so many ways in which we can take different shots of a follwoing scene.

This is where we shot the scene where i am being followed down the stairs and we realised we had to put the camera at a low angle by moving the tripod to its lowest by using the handles.

This is where we check all shots for focus, angle and the way the scene is set and we must consider the mise en scene and lighting to make sure it flows throughout all our clips this is why we had to make sure that we try to film all of the scenes in one day to get the timing right and create a realistic feel.

This is the scene where we decide to take a high angle shot of me walking and the follower/hitman is watching me and making decisions on where my next move is... this is when it slightly goes wrong because right here he is behind me a bit more than the beginning so the last shot tells the timing that he is late and lost track of the victim.

this picture illustrates the fact it was windy and cold and we had to try set up equipment where there was no wind because even our hands got a bit too cold to handle the equipment. we learned that we had to be quick because the second time we done it we were running behind on time. also had to re-shoot all the scenes again. explained below.

 

 

 

 

* SHOOT 2 was where we had to re-do all the scenes because the main characters was injured at home so 'Emadul' had to step in and play the part of the person being followed. Even though we had to re-do everything we were more confident in this because we knew what shots we needed and had a rough idea of what we needed to do to make the shots more better... including making sure the camera is level and isnt really shakey when we had to do tracking and in this new shoot we rememberd to have a variety of shots.

FILMING - Behind the Scenes (SHOOT1)

With our story board, plot and ideas put together, our group were now able to start setting up filming in the barbican (the main location). The weather was fine according to the plan. The pictures shown beneath are behind the scenes, starting from the collection of equipment to the located spot where we processed our filming.

The equipment we used were picked up from the media department. The lighting equipment is one of which were used, as well as cameras, tripods and the camera itself that pictures were taken with. This picture was taken in the classroom before we set of for our journey to the barbican.

Although there was traffic that consumed a bit of time, we were still able to make it to the barbican at the time we planned to reach the destination, as we left earlier to avoid the traffic from cutting valuable time. Equipment was put in the luggage section to prevent damage.

We reached the location (Barbican Station). the first shots began from just outside the station, as the picture shows people going in and out of the entrance. Our group was aware of the amount of people that would be in the area, so we had to be sure that we used the equipment in the safest place to avoid any collision of equipment and actors.

This picture was taken at the same spot. We discussed exactly how we will take the shots including angles, to perfect how and what would be seen on the screen.

After the first couple shots were complete, we moved from outside the station, up the stairs of the station and to the long bridge pathway as shown below. The pathway was empty at the time of filming, giving us a better chance to use more space around us. the picture shows members of the group once again discussing how we could use the space and what shots would be used.

Once we discussed our plan for shot types in this location, we set of filming. the two main characters are shown in the picture, one behind another, carrying out the routine of someone being followed.

The first shooting got the group familiar with the area and gained more confidence the group as to what we were doing. More filming was done, but as a group we decided that we would have to make another journey to the barbican to complete the filming and to retake a few faulty shots.
